My Kind of Greece

I love Greece! I love everything about it; the beaches, the food, the beautiful villages and the laid back simplicity of the place. Some of my top 5 experiences are to be found in this country and that is why I can’t stop going back. I have done a lot (and I mean a lot) of research about Greece, so I thought I would share the best of it with you in order to help you decide where to go.

WHEN TO GO:
Easter – especially during Greek Easter, as all the towns and villages are buzzing with energy during the most important Greek religious festival of the year. Try and go to an island as far south as possible (such as Crete) if you want to have decent weather. I love this time of year in Greece as the crowds haven’t arrived yet.

Summer – The best time to go is anytime from beginning of June until the third week of July and then last few days of August until late September. Avoid going (if you can) during the first three weeks of August as it can get very hot and overcrowded.

WHERE TO GO:
CYCLADES
This group of islands has to be my favourite part of Greece. I just fall in love with the white washed Cycladic architecture every time. On the whole, I prefer the smaller islands and would recommend avoiding islands such as Mykonos, Paros and Santorini in the summer as they become far too busy.

Andros – This underrated island is the 2nd largest island in the Cyclades group. Full of beautiful villages and coves and if you are looking for a real gem of a place to stay in, then look no further – Onar is a collection of 9 individual cottages in a secluded location near a fantastic beach.

Naxos – Has many little gems and is worth visiting, especially if you have a young family. There are some great places to eat, Axiotissa being my favourite and family friendly beaches such as Il Petrino at Plaka Beach; a fantastic taverna is located there where you can eat an array of delicious Greek dishes. Stay at Kavos Naxos Hotel.

Antiparos – Catch a small boat from Paros and stay in this small and beautiful island. Stay at the Beach House.

Koufonisia – I love this place – it’s simple, beautiful and low-key. Some of my favourite experiences ever are to be found here – my favourite beach (Fanos), restaurant (Kalofeggo) and bar (Sorokos Bar)! Stay at Portes Houses but be sure to book well in advance as it is popular.

Folegandros – Awesome views and a stunningly beautiful main town. Stay at Provalma Studios.

Sifnos – Family friendly island with some of the best food in the Cyclades, a beautiful main village and lovely places to stay. Stay at Gerofinikas in Apollonia.

DODECANESE
Crete – Has something for everyone. Stay at Ammos Hotel, close to vibrant Chania if you want a more authentic experience.

SARONIC ISlANDS
Spetses – Small car-free, picturesque island. Stay at the lovely boutique hotel, Orloff Resort.
